Can I move my Windows license to a new PC?
Short answer
Retail licenses transfer freely: deactivate on the old PC with slmgr /upk, then activate on the new one. OEM licenses are tied to the original motherboard and cannot legally transfer (a board swap on the same PC is considered the same device under Microsoft's rules).

For Retail keys, uninstall the product key on the old PC with 'slmgr /upk' followed by 'slmgr /cpky', then install Windows on the new machine and activate with the same key. OEM keys carry a hardware-locked licence: Microsoft's OEM rules define the motherboard as the PC, so a motherboard swap (except for warranty replacement) is treated as a new PC and requires a new licence. If the licence was linked to a Microsoft account before the swap, it may still reactivate — but that is a courtesy, not a right.
