OEM vs Retail keys

Retail keys are transferable to a new PC (one device active at a time). OEM keys are bound to the first motherboard they activate on and cannot be moved. Both activate the same Windows or Office edition.

Product activation

Online process that links a product key to your Microsoft account or hardware ID. Failures usually return a code (0x80072F8F, 0xC004C003, 0xC004F074, 0x803F7001) with a known fix.

Refunds and replacement

14-day refund on any unactivated key. Lifetime replacement on any key that ever fails to activate, including after a hardware change covered by Microsoft's transfer rights.

Legal resale of software licenses

Established by CJEU UsedSoft GmbH v Oracle (C-128/11, 2012): perpetual licenses lawfully placed on the EU market may be resold once the first acquirer makes their copy unusable. LicenseVault operates under this doctrine.
