How to activate Windows 11
Step-by-step guide to activating Windows 11 with a retail product key — fresh install, upgrade from Windows 10, troubleshooting.
Before you start
You'll need: the 25-character product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx), an internet connection, and 5 minutes.
If you're upgrading from a genuine Windows 10 license, you may not need a new key — Windows 11 inherits Windows 10 activation automatically.
Step 1 — Open Activation Settings
Press Win + I to open Settings. Go to System → Activation. You'll see the current state — typically 'Windows is not activated' until you enter a key.
Step 2 — Change product key
Click 'Change product key', enter the 25-character key in the format Microsoft shows, click Next, then Activate.
Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and confirms within seconds. The Activation page should switch to 'Windows is activated with a digital license'.
Step 3 — Tie to your Microsoft account
Once activated, sign in to a Microsoft account (Settings → Accounts → Your info). This binds the digital license to your account so you can reactivate on the same PC after a clean install or after hardware changes.
Troubleshooting
Error 0xC004C003 (Invalid key): double-check the key — it's 25 characters with no extra spaces. Open the email exactly as we sent it.
Error 0x80072EE7 / 0x8007232B: activation servers can't be reached. Check your DNS settings or VPN; activation needs a clean route to Microsoft.
Error 0xC004F050 (Key blocked): rare with retail keys. Email us your order number and we'll replace it within an hour.
