Uninstall old Office cleanly before Office 2024

Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365 can leave activation conflicts when you install Office 2024. Here's the clean-uninstall procedure that always works.

Why a clean uninstall matters

Office leaves behind activation tokens, registry keys, Click-to-Run streamer settings and shared MSI components. Installing Office 2024 on top of an unclean removal often produces error 0x426-0 or 'Another version is being installed' — and Office becomes hard to repair.

The clean approach takes 10 extra minutes and avoids hours of troubleshooting.

Step 1 — GUI uninstall

Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Find any 'Microsoft Office', 'Microsoft 365 Apps' or 'Office 16/19/21' entry and uninstall. Reboot.

Step 2 — Run SaRA's Office removal tool

Download the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant from microsoft.com/sara. Pick 'Office & Office apps' → 'I have Office installed but having trouble uninstalling it' → run the tool. It removes registry leftovers, Click-to-Run remnants and activation tokens.

  1. Reboot after SaRA

Don't skip the reboot — pending file operations need to flush.

  2. Install Office 2024

Use the installer from your order email or the Office Deployment Tool (see our ODT guide).

  3. Activate with your product key

Open any Office app → Sign in or enter product key. Activation completes in seconds.

Keep your settings

User documents in Documents/, OneDrive/, Desktop/ are untouched by an Office uninstall. Outlook PST/OST files in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook remain too — Office 2024 will reattach them on first launch.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Outlook emails?
No. Outlook data files (.pst/.ost) survive uninstall. If you use Exchange or M365, mail is on the server anyway.
