Check the licence rights, not just the product key

A product key is an activation credential, not a complete statement of your usage rights. Before buying, identify the exact product, edition, licence channel and permitted number of devices or users. Microsoft’s terms distinguish software supplied with a device, standalone purchases and organisational licensing. Successful activation does not, by itself, establish that a licence was properly acquired or that its terms permit your intended use. Keep the listing, invoice and any accompanying licence documentation.

Read the Microsoft terms that apply to the specific product and acquisition method rather than relying on a generic description such as “lifetime key.” A perpetual licence generally permits continued use of the licensed version under its terms; it does not promise indefinite technical support, compatibility with future operating systems or free upgrades to later releases. If a listing does not explain the licence channel or eligibility requirements, seek clarification before paying or replacing an existing installation.

  • Check the full product name, edition, platform and licence channel.
  • Confirm whether the entitlement covers a device, a user or an organisation.
  • Find applicable retail software terms at microsoft.com/useterms.
  • For organisational licensing, consult Microsoft Product Terms and your agreement.
  • Retain purchase records without exposing the complete key publicly.

Choose a Windows licence that matches the device and installation

Start by checking the PC’s current Windows edition and activation status in Settings. In Windows 11, open Settings, System, then Activation; in Windows 10, open Settings, Update & Security, then Activation. Home and Pro are different editions, and the licence must cover the edition you intend to activate. If the device already has a valid digital licence, reinstalling the same edition on the same hardware normally does not require purchasing another key.

Check hardware compatibility separately from licensing. A Windows 11 key does not make an unsupported computer meet Microsoft’s requirements, which include a supported processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool before planning an upgrade. For a clean installation, back up files and obtain installation media from Microsoft. When reinstalling an already licensed edition, you can usually skip entering a key and activate online afterward.

  • Record the installed edition before buying or reinstalling.
  • Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility guidance, not activation success, to assess hardware.
  • Back up files and save any BitLocker recovery key before major changes.
  • Do not assume an organisation’s Enterprise entitlement transfers to a personal PC.
  • Check whether Pro-specific features are actually needed before choosing Pro.

Compare Office purchases by platform, applications and renewal model

Choose Office by the applications and usage rights you need, not simply by the year in its name. Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024 are one-time purchases for one PC or Mac, while Microsoft 365 subscription benefits depend on the plan. Office Home 2024 is intended for non-commercial use; Office Home & Business 2024 includes Outlook and permits use at home or work. Check the exact edition before assuming a particular application is included.

For consumer Office purchases that require redemption, use the Microsoft account you intend to retain and follow Microsoft’s official setup instructions. Once the product is associated with that account, the account becomes important for reinstalling and managing it; repeatedly entering the original key is not the normal reinstall workflow. Confirm Windows or macOS compatibility and uninstall conflicting Office installations when Microsoft’s setup guidance requires it. An existing subscription is not automatically cancelled by installing a one-time-purchase edition.

  • Check the included applications and supported operating system.
  • Confirm commercial-use rights if the software is for work.
  • Distinguish a one-time purchase from a subscription requiring renewal.
  • Use account.microsoft.com/services to review account-linked products and subscriptions.
  • Do not assume consumer redemption instructions apply to volume-licensed Office.

Handle activation failures and device transfers without losing your entitlement

If activation fails, record the exact error code before changing anything. Confirm that the installed product and edition match the licence, that the internet connection works and that the device’s date and time are correct. For Windows, use the Activation troubleshooter where available. A mismatch, hardware change or organisational activation requirement needs a different response from a mistyped key. Avoid repeated reinstalls or unofficial activation scripts, which do not resolve the underlying licensing question.

Before moving software to another computer, check its transfer terms. Under Microsoft’s standard Windows terms, standalone software can generally be transferred to another device you own if it is removed from the previous device; software preinstalled on a device generally transfers only with that licensed device. Applicable terms and local law matter. Linking a Windows digital licence to a Microsoft account can help with reactivation after hardware changes, but it does not create transfer rights the licence otherwise lacks.

  • Keep the error code, purchase evidence and product details together.
  • Use official Microsoft activation guidance rather than third-party bypass tools.
  • Do not share passwords, recovery codes or full product keys in public support posts.
  • Treat motherboard replacement as a potential activation and licensing issue.
  • Check Office transfer terms separately; Windows rules do not govern Office.
