Choose Office by its applications, platform and update model
Start with the applications you actually need and the operating system you use. Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is a Windows volume-licensed suite that includes Access; it is not the Mac edition of Office. Microsoft 365 includes subscription benefits and ongoing feature updates, while perpetual Office provides the purchased version without entitlement to future major releases. A perpetual licence also does not mean indefinite security updates: Microsoft's published support lifecycle still applies to that release.
For a household, count people separately from devices. Microsoft 365 Family supports up to six people, each using their own Microsoft account, with each person able to remain signed in on five devices simultaneously. Those devices can include compatible computers, tablets and phones. This is not thirty transferable perpetual Office licences. If only one Windows computer needs desktop applications, a perpetual edition may fit, but check the exact edition, licensing channel and permitted use before comparing costs.
- Check whether you need Access, Outlook or another specific application rather than choosing by suite name alone.
- Do not assume a Windows Office key can activate Office for Mac.
- Keep each Family participant's account and OneDrive storage separate; do not share one account password.
- Distinguish ongoing feature updates from security updates for a fixed Office release.
- Check Microsoft's lifecycle page for the exact product, not just the year in its name.
Check the licensing channel, not just whether a key activates
A product key is an activation credential, not the complete evidence of a licence. Successful activation alone does not establish that software was supplied under the correct agreement or that the buyer has the required usage rights. Microsoft distinguishes retail, preinstalled OEM and commercial volume licensing, with different assignment and transfer rules. Before buying, request the exact product name and channel, and retain the invoice together with any documentation explaining the entitlement being supplied.
This distinction matters particularly for Office Professional Plus 2024: Microsoft's Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is offered through volume licensing, rather than as a standard consumer retail suite. A listing describing one PC does not, by itself, explain the underlying licensing arrangement. Commercial activation can use MAK or KMS, but those technologies do not create licence rights. If instructions require an unrelated public KMS server, an activation script or disabling security software, stop and request clarification.
- Ask which Microsoft agreement and licence terms govern the supplied entitlement.
- For resold licences, request documentation supporting the seller's right to transfer them.
- Use microsoft.com/useterms for applicable retail terms and microsoft.com/licensing/terms for Microsoft Product Terms.
- Do not assume volume-licensed Office follows the consumer Microsoft-account redemption process.
- Keep product keys private when sharing screenshots or requesting technical help.
Prepare a Windows 11 Pro upgrade and avoid activation mismatches
Before purchasing Windows 11 Pro, open Settings, then System, then Activation to record the installed edition and activation status. A Home licence does not activate Pro, and purchasing Pro does not make unsupported hardware compatible with Windows 11. Run Microsoft's PC Health Check and confirm the required processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot capability. Back up important files and save any BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key before changing firmware settings or replacing hardware.
If a compatible PC already runs activated Windows 11 Home, the supported edition-upgrade route is through Activation and Change product key using an appropriate Pro key; a clean installation is not normally necessary. For a new installation, obtain Microsoft's official media and select the edition matching your licence. A motherboard replacement can trigger reactivation. Linking a digital licence to your Microsoft account can help with troubleshooting, but it does not override the transfer restrictions of the underlying licence.
- Record any activation error code before reinstalling or making further changes.
- Use the Activation troubleshooter for a previously activated device after a hardware change.
- Retail Windows transfers must follow the applicable terms and require removal from the previous device.
- Preinstalled OEM Windows generally transfers to another user only with the licensed device.
- Check language requirements separately: Windows Home Single Language restricts the Windows display language.
- Avoid buying another key until you have ruled out an edition mismatch or an existing digital licence.
Keep the right records for Polish purchases and digital-content rights
For a Polish business purchase, provide the correct legal name, address and tax identification details before the invoice is issued. Cross-border VAT treatment depends on the supplier's location, the customer's status and the applicable supply rules; having a business name alone is not enough to establish reverse-charge treatment. Check the invoice rather than inferring tax treatment from the checkout currency. A Polish accountant can confirm how an invoice in a foreign currency should be recorded and converted.
For consumer purchases, distinguish a seller's voluntary refund promise from statutory rights. Under EU and Polish rules, the withdrawal right for paid digital content supplied without a physical medium can be lost once supply begins, but only when the required consent, acknowledgement and confirmation conditions are met. This does not eliminate statutory remedies for non-conforming digital content. Save the product description, order confirmation, consent wording and correspondence so you can document what was promised and supplied.
- Verify EU VAT-number details through VIES where relevant to the transaction.
- Keep the invoice and licence-entitlement documents; they serve different purposes.
- Separate your bank's currency conversion from the exchange rate required for accounting or VAT.
- Read any immediate-delivery consent before accepting it rather than assuming every digital order has identical cancellation rights.
- Describe activation or conformity problems in writing and retain the seller's response.
- Consult UOKiK consumer guidance or a qualified adviser when the applicable rights are unclear.
