Check the Office licensing channel, not just the product name

Office Professional Plus is not the same licensing product as Office Home or Office Home & Business. Microsoft's Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is offered through commercial volume licensing, where use rights come from the applicable agreement and Product Terms. Before choosing a listing labelled Professional Plus 2024, establish the exact edition, licensing channel and documentation supplied. A product key that activates successfully does not, by itself, establish that you have a valid licence.

For a business purchase, keep the invoice together with evidence explaining the licence's origin and the rights transferred to you. This is particularly important for second-hand or volume-licensed software: a key alone does not explain whether resale conditions have been met or which agreement governs use. Do not assume a perpetual licence includes future Office releases, unrestricted transfers or installation on additional computers. Those rights depend on the specific product and applicable licence terms.

• Ask whether the product is retail, OEM or volume licensed.
• Match the installer to the exact licensed edition and release.
• Check device assignment, reassignment and transfer rights separately.
• For organisational purchases, retain licensing evidence as well as proof of payment.
• Treat activation status and legal entitlement as separate checks.

Prepare a Windows 11 Pro upgrade without risking your files

Start by opening Settings, then System, then About to record your current Windows edition and processor information. Check activation under System, then Activation, and use Microsoft's PC Health Check app to assess Windows 11 eligibility. A Pro licence does not remove hardware requirements, including a supported processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, involve its administrator before changing editions or reinstalling Windows.

Back up important files and save any BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key somewhere separate from the computer before making changes. For an activated Windows 11 Home installation, Microsoft's supported Home-to-Pro route uses the Activation settings and a valid Pro key or Store purchase; a clean installation is not normally required. A motherboard replacement is a different situation and may require reactivation. Whether the existing licence can move with that change depends on its licensing channel.

• Keep recovery keys available before firmware changes or reinstallation.

Choose Office by platform, applications and household needs

Make a list of the applications you actually need before comparing Office products. Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, but not Outlook, and is licensed for non-commercial use. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook and permits use at home or work. Both are available for one PC or Mac, subject to system requirements. Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is a Windows product; Access is not available as a native Mac application.

For a household with several users or mixed devices, compare a subscription with separate perpetual licences rather than counting computers alone. Microsoft 365 Family supports up to six people, each using their own Microsoft account and signing in on up to five devices simultaneously. Shared subscription benefits are not the same as a shared mailbox or shared private storage. A perpetual Office release instead grants continuing use of that licensed version, without automatically including the next major release.

• Check Outlook and Access requirements explicitly rather than assuming every suite includes them.
• For Mac computers, select a product that expressly supports macOS.
• Check current operating-system requirements before purchasing Office 2024.
• Invite household members through Microsoft's sharing process; do not share one account password.
• Back up Outlook data and check add-in compatibility before replacing an existing Office installation.

Keep the right records for Swedish consumer and business purchases

For a Swedish consumer buying online, distinguish the seller's voluntary refund policy from statutory rights. Distance contracts generally have a 14-day withdrawal period, but the right can be lost for digital content supplied without a physical medium when the required express consent and acknowledgement are obtained and supply begins. Simply receiving a key should not be treated as a complete explanation of those legal conditions. Rights concerning defective or misdescribed digital content are a separate matter.

EU cross-border business VAT treatment depends on factors such as the supplier's location, the customer's taxable status and the nature of the supply; a VAT number alone does not settle every case. Keep the invoice, order confirmation, product description and licensing documentation together. For Swedish bookkeeping, ask your accountant how to record a foreign-currency purchase and any applicable reverse-charge VAT.

• Save the product description and terms that applied when you ordered.
• Keep any digital-delivery consent and withdrawal acknowledgement with the order records.
• Document activation errors with the exact error code, without exposing the full product key.
• Check that the invoice identifies the actual purchaser and correct legal entity.
