Choose Office by device, applications and licence channel

Start with the computers and applications you actually need, rather than the number of applications in a bundle. Office 2024 is a perpetual release: it does not include an entitlement to the next major Office version, and support still follows Microsoft's published lifecycle. Microsoft 365 is a subscription that includes ongoing application updates while active. Microsoft 365 Family supports up to six people, each with a separate Microsoft account, rather than one shared account for the household.

Check the exact edition and licensing channel before buying. Microsoft's Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is a Windows product offered through volume licensing, not the standard consumer retail Office package. Its entitlement depends on the applicable licensing agreement; successful activation alone does not establish ownership or compliant use. For a Mac, compare a Mac-compatible Office edition or Microsoft 365 instead. If you need Access, remember that the desktop application is available only for Windows.

  • List required applications, especially Outlook and Access, before choosing an edition.
  • Confirm whether the product is retail, volume-licensed or subscription-based.
  • Microsoft 365 Family allows each person to sign in on five devices simultaneously.
  • A perpetual Office licence does not include future major-version upgrades.
  • Do not assume a Windows Office key also licenses the Mac edition.

Check Windows 11 compatibility before changing editions

Before purchasing Windows 11 Pro, open Settings, then System, then About to identify your current Windows edition and hardware. Check Activation separately to see whether Windows is already activated. Use Microsoft's PC Health Check application to assess Windows 11 eligibility. Important requirements include a supported processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. A Pro licence does not make unsupported hardware compatible, and changing editions does not remove these requirements from Microsoft's supported installation path.

If the computer already runs activated Windows 11 Home, an eligible Pro product key can normally be entered under Settings, System, Activation, Change product key to upgrade the edition. Back up important files first and save any existing device-encryption recovery key somewhere accessible outside the computer. For a clean installation, use Microsoft's official installation media and select the edition covered by your licence. Installing Pro with a Home entitlement is a common cause of activation failure.

  • Check hardware compatibility before paying for an operating-system upgrade.
  • Record your current edition and activation status.
  • Back up files and encryption recovery keys before installation or firmware changes.
  • Use Pro for features such as Remote Desktop hosting and domain join.
  • Avoid assuming that an edition upgrade requires erasing the computer.

Understand transfers, reinstalls and what activation proves

Keep the distinction between a product key, activation and a licence clear. A key is an activation credential; the licence sets out your permitted use. Under Microsoft's standard Windows retail terms, standalone software can generally be transferred to another device you own, provided it is removed from the previous device. Windows supplied preinstalled on a device generally transfers only with that licensed device. Volume-licensing rights follow the relevant agreement, so a listing's transfer promise needs supporting licence-channel information.

For Windows reinstalls, an existing digital licence can often reactivate the same edition on the same device without re-entering a key. Linking that digital licence to your Microsoft account can help the Activation troubleshooter after a significant hardware change, but it does not create transfer rights that the original licence lacks. A motherboard replacement can affect activation. Before replacing hardware or retiring a computer, retain purchase evidence, record the edition and check the applicable Microsoft licence terms.

  • Ask which Microsoft licence terms govern the supplied product.
  • Do not treat successful activation as proof of a valid licence chain.
  • A Microsoft account link does not turn an OEM licence into a retail licence.
  • Match the installed Windows edition to the existing entitlement when reinstalling.
  • Avoid publishing full product keys in screenshots or public support posts.

Prepare Singapore business purchase records before checkout

For a Singapore business purchase, decide who will own and administer the software before placing the order. Use the correct legal entity and billing details, and retain the invoice, product description, licence-channel information and applicable terms together. An invoice documents a transaction, but it does not by itself establish Microsoft licensing rights. For volume-licensed Office in particular, ask what documentation establishes your organisation's entitlement rather than relying only on a key or an activation screenshot.

Singapore's standard GST rate is 9%, but whether a business can claim input tax depends on its GST status, the nature of the expense and the required supporting documents. Do not assume that every receipt showing GST supports a claim. Overseas vendor registration has specific rules, including treatment of GST-registered business customers. If purchasing for a GST-registered organisation, provide the relevant registration details and check current IRAS guidance or your accountant's advice before treating the charge as recoverable input tax.

  • Resolve the legal purchaser and intended users before buying.
  • Keep licence-entitlement records separately from installation instructions.
  • Check overseas vendor GST treatment before submitting a business expense claim.
  • Retain both the foreign-currency invoice and the actual SGD payment record.
  • Separate the software price from card-conversion fees in internal records.
