Les clés Windows OEM sont moins chères mais liées à une carte mère. Les clés Retail sont transférables. Voici exactement ce qui change et laquelle vous devriez acheter.

La différence fonctionnelle
Une clé OEM est liée de façon permanente à la première carte mère sur laquelle elle est activée. Si vous remplacez la carte mère, l'activation est perdue. Vous devrez acheter une nouvelle clé.
Une clé Retail est transférable. Déplacez-la vers un nouveau PC en la désactivant sur l'ancien (ou en laissant Microsoft détecter automatiquement le changement de matériel après une connexion avec un compte Microsoft).

Prix et support
Les clés OEM sont moins chères car Microsoft les vend à prix réduit aux constructeurs de systèmes, avec pour contrepartie que Microsoft ne les prend pas en charge directement — le support est à la charge de l'OEM (vous).
Les clés Retail bénéficient du support direct Microsoft et sont légèrement plus chères en conséquence.

- Puis-je transférer une clé OEM depuis un PC en panne ?
- Officiellement, non. Microsoft lie les clés OEM à l'identifiant matériel de la première carte mère. En pratique, vous pouvez parfois appeler le support MS et expliquer la situation — ils peuvent réactiver une fois, mais ce n'est pas garanti.
- Une clé Retail est-elle la même qu'une clé « Full Packaged Product » (FPP) ?
- Oui. FPP est le terme interne de Microsoft pour la référence Retail en boîte. Mêmes droits d'activation, simplement livrée de façon électronique.
