Der funktionale Unterschied
Ein OEM-Key ist dauerhaft an die erste Hauptplatine gebunden, auf der er aktiviert wird. Wird die Hauptplatine getauscht, erlischt die Aktivierung. Sie müssten einen neuen Key kaufen.
Ein Retail-Key ist übertragbar. Übertragen Sie ihn auf einen neuen PC, indem Sie ihn auf dem alten deaktivieren (oder Microsoft die Hardware-Änderung nach einer Microsoft-Kontoanmeldung automatisch erkennen lassen).

Preis und Support
OEM-Keys sind günstiger, weil Microsoft sie Systemherstellern mit Rabatt verkauft – mit dem Vorbehalt, dass Microsoft keinen direkten Support leistet. Der Support liegt beim OEM (also bei Ihnen).
Retail-Keys beinhalten direkten Microsoft-Support und sind entsprechend teurer.

Häufige Fragen
- Kann ich einen OEM-Key von einem defekten PC übertragen?
- Offiziell nicht. Microsoft bindet OEM-Keys an die Hardware-ID der ersten Hauptplatine. In der Praxis können Sie manchmal den MS-Support anrufen und erklären – eine einmalige Reaktivierung ist möglich, aber nicht garantiert.
- Ist ein Retail-Key dasselbe wie ein 'Full Packaged Product' (FPP)-Key?
- Ja. FPP ist Microsofts interner Begriff für die verpackte Retail-SKU. Gleiche Aktivierungsrechte, nur elektronisch geliefert.
